I woke up to the dreaded sound of hail. What are the first things you think about when you see hail forecast for your area, or worse, it suddenly starts to fall? Since our garage is full of items other than the pickup which site in the drive way, I thought of both our windshield, then of our roof.
While we had hail for several minutes, at least 10 minutes, it was closer to pea to nickle size. It did damage our porch roof which is made of corrugated plastic panels; we’ll be repairing a three inch crack. Must have been a larger hail stone.
Here is a link to a page on About.com for several very large hail stones which fell in 2007 South Dakota.

Have you started planning for vacation? Some vacations can require a year (or more) to plan however, if you’re staying in Texas and/or the Southwest there are so many beautiful and interesting places to visit. It’s almost mind boggling! I’ve always asked friends and family: “Where would you go for a week or so, somewhere that is an day’s drive from home?”
And of the thousands of possibilities, one is: Carlsbad Caverns National Park. You get to go “out of state,” see some terrific scenery, and it’s only a day (or day 1/2 ) drive.
Many years ago I use to go to Carlsbad, NM on a regular basis and take groups through the Caverns. I never tired of tour and went over 30 times. I should have taken the Cosmic Hint that a career in the US Park Service was a possibility. Great pages here about the Cave Tours.
If you can’t handle the long walk down, via the natural entrance, there is an elevator which takes you to the Underground Rest Area . Back when I use to go you could buy lunch and eat down in the Cavern and I see that picking up drinks and snacks is still available. Also, there is no lodging so when trip planning you’ll want to stay in Carlsbad, NM which is about 20 miles from the park.
From the official site, here is a photo of the natural entrance:
If you go during the “big spring” after the rains, you’ll also be treated to the desert in bloom! Check out the Carlsbad, NM Chamber of Commerce site for all the area activities and places to stay. Remember that New Mexico isn’t just Santa Fe and Taos (both of which I adore).

Today is the Spring Equinox – the day and night will be of equal length. It is also call the Vernal Equinox.
The Vernal Equinox is a point on the celestial sphere where the ecliptic intersects the celestial equator. In other words, this is the location of the Sun at the moment the Northern Hemisphere begins the season that we call spring.
When the Sun reaches this point, it is directly above the Earth’s Equator and so somewhere along the Earth’s Equator at that moment in time, the Sun is directly overhead and so objects like flag poles and fence posts will not cast a shadow. For this year, it happened at 11:02am Greenwich time or 6:02am CDT. I slept through it!

Let’s celebrate Spring in a new home by Drake Homes Inc!
Even in a new home, the urge to paint a room or two can help with your spring fling!
VOC stands for: volatile organic compounds and you want a paint which is either low in VOCs or VOC free. Especially if you have, or are going to have, a child, if you have young children, and/or pets! this is an eco-friendly choice for you.
The website Treehugger.com has a good article on Zero-VOC Interior Paints, and includes five paint brand suggestions (and why these particular paints).
I was drawn to one paint brand: YOLO Coclorhouse, which tells readers their paint contains no VOC ingredients plus the paint cans are 100 percent recycled plastic.
Research! Quality paints are expensive so buy the best you can, but get What you want/need. Buy test sizes containers of the colors you are considering and apply a good sized test area on all the wall of the room(s) you are going to paint. That paint will never look like that small paint chip you’re holding in the store!
