Making a difference in Houston! Here are some awesome photos from Drake Homes Inc model homes:
during an earlier time. I posted some postcards in April 2013 and the blog posts have been popular. Let’s post a couple more.
Downtown Houston, TX. We’ve been trying to find a recent photo so you can compare however, nothing useful, or allows me to use it, is available right now. You can see the courthouse in the lower right corner. We couldn’t locate the Rice Hotel, maybe you can?!
This card is part of the massive Tichnor Brothers Collection which contains approximately 25,000 office proofs of postcards of the United States published by the Boston firm Tichnor Brothers Inc. These are color postcards with a linen texture dated ca. 1930-1945. The concentration is on American vacation places. You can find the start of this collection “The Tichnor Brothers Collection” here.

Houston’s most historic hotel was owned at various times by William Marsh Rice and Jesse H Jones. This was also the site of the first Capitol of the Republic of Texas and offered the first air-conditioned public space! Read the history of the Rice Hotel here…>

Dateline! I can’t seem to find a date but the headline reads:
Hydropolis Underwater Hotel, Dubai. Hydropolis is the first luxury underwater hotel in the world, and is currently under construction in Dubai.
What a great design! Sadly I kept searching only to find that construction has not begun or that there appears to be any planned. Here’s an short article about what would have been or could one day be, one of the most expensive hotels ever built: Wiki article re: Hydropolis You’ll see that this hasn’t been updated since mid 2010.
First let’s talk pizza. Pizza not only near Houston, but in North Texas.
Easy? I wanted to learn who had the highest rating, the best reviews for pizza near The Woodlands. The top rated pizzeria? Gimald’s Pizzeria. And what ho! there are two in the DFW area as well. Most reviews look great too! Here is the link to their official web site: Gimald’s Pizzeria
Many people mention that the menu items are pricey, so this is not your “gobble it down” and go mow the lawn pizza, at least it doesn’t appear to be so, so be warned. I’m already put in my request to visit the Gimald’s Pizzeria nearest to us, and that’s about 30 miles That Way…> so it maybe a few days.
Second, I use to pride myself on being a Chicken Fried Steak snob, but sadly a good one is hard to find now-a-days. A little place over in Cleburne still does a nice one though, so if you’re ever in this area: Susannah’s Homestyle Cooking is a good place to try out. They have really great onion rings too. As one reviewer states: don’t go here right before you have your cholesterol tested.
When we lived in Tomball, then Houston, we would go out to Goodson’s Cafe and it still has my vote for one of top five chicken fried steaks I’ve had in my life.
So there, I’ve given you two places to try! Utterly different types of foods, both of which will get you moved out of your skinny jeans in time for your New Year’s Resolutions. Hope one of those resolutions is to come out and visit us at Drake Homes Inc!
The Texas Department of Information Resources has put together TexasOnline.com, a nationally recognized, award-winning portal for the citizens of Texas. You’ll find links to websites for cities, counties, chambers of commerce, schools and more. You will also find answers to questions regarding such topics as state laws, state government and required business licenses.
The site offers some nice photos, posted by visitors, showing Texas at it’s Best….>Flickr: Texas.gov
While there are millions of photos available, just google images “Texas”, it’s nice to see what other people find interesting enough to take a pic of, and post.
And stories! Do we have stories about Texas and the folks who lived them, and many are true. Go to Texas storyteller Jeff Carroll’s website: Jeff Carroll-Legendary Texas. Jeff offers a story or two every month from his books, here, on the Hitching Post
