Tonight’s full moon is called the Full Cold Moon. Since our “hunter/gatherer” lives are more Wal-Mart and less open prairies, many have forgotten that each full moon has a name all its own. If you’re interested in these names, the Farmers Almanac has a great page with not only the names of the full moons, but their meanings as well.
Full Moon Names and Their Meanings
Here’s what they say about tonight’s full moon:
The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon – December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.
My all time favorite is the name for March’s moon: The Full Worm Moon. I dunno, it just makes me smile. I’m not a fisherman so I don’t associate it with worms coming up to be harvested for bait. I always see cartoon worms hopping and skipping about and celebrating spring.
